Hawaii Social Work License Renewal

Social Worker License

Updated: April 22nd, 2022

Hawaii requires every social work license holder to renew their license every three years. The board operates a three-year license renewal window that is independent of your license issuance date— for example, if your renewal expires on the 30th of June 2022, 2025 will be the next renewal expiration year.

License renewal begins eight weeks before the renewal expiration date.

Visit here to apply for license renewal.

License renewal fees will apply and vary depending on the time of your application and how close it is to the end of the triennium window.

Continuing Education (CE) is necessary to renew any of the social works licenses. Applicants for license renewal must complete 45 credit hours of CE courses within each three-year renewal window. These 45 hours must include three credit hours of coursework in Ethics where one credit hour equates to 50 minutes.

These courses must have gained the approval of the ASWB, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), or the National Association of Social Worker Chapters (NASWC).

Note, however, that new or first-time licensees are exempted from CE for their first license renewal.

Failure to renew licenses before the expiration date will result in an expiration of the license. Afterward, the board will allow a one-year period for license restoration.
