Purpose for the scholarship To support qualified and passionate lawyers in developing new and innovative legal projects that can impact lives and serve communities in desperate need of legal assistance.
Requirements to qualify? Applicant must have graduated from an Equal Justice Works Member Law School with a J.D. or LL.M.; may not have held a full-time (more than 30 hours/week), permanent, public interest lawyer position previously, though applicants coming from bridge/gap fellowships or clerkships are eligible. Experienced private sector lawyers who have demonstrated a commitment to public interest law and have the relevant skills and initiative to carry out the goals of the project are encouraged to apply. Candidates may not have participated previously in any major fellowship program (such as the Skadden Fellowship Program, Echoing Green Fellowship, Soros Justice Fellowship, etc.). Fellows can join an existing Fellowship program or design their own Fellowship.
Selection criteria among applicants Applications will be judged based on quality of the proposed project; the individual fellowship candidate, and the host organization, taking into consideration other factors such as issue area, geographic diversity and sponsor preferences; must sit for the bar exam before beginning their Fellowship.
