The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a public health agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. SAMHSA’s mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities. The organization works to achieve this mission by providing leadership and funding for a national program of treatment and rehabilitation, and promoting and developing policies and practices that prevent substance abuse and mental illness. SAMHSA also collects and disseminates data and research, provides technical assistance and training, and funds grant programs to support and improve the delivery of substance abuse and mental health services across the country.

A substance abuse social worker can use the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as a professional tool in the following ways:

  1. Access to research and data on substance abuse and mental health to inform their practice.
  2. Locate and utilize evidence-based practices, treatment programs, and resources for clients.
  3. Stay informed about best practices and changes in policies related to substance abuse and mental health services.
  4. Participate in training and educational opportunities provided by SAMHSA to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  5. Connect with other professionals in the field through the SAMHSA network and resources.

By utilizing SAMHSA as a professional tool, substance abuse social workers can improve the quality of their services and support the recovery of clients with substance abuse and mental health issues.
